Install a Luxurious Kitchen or Bath Fireplace

Bathroom FireplaceFew home amenities speak luxury more than a lovely fireplace in the kitchen or bathroom. But in addition to the elegance they bring to a room, fireplaces also are a great source of warmth and, in the case of some kitchen fireplace models, an additional cooking device. The first thing to consider when looking at adding a fireplace to the kitchen or bath is if these rooms in your home appropriate for such an installation.

Traditionally, fireplaces are found in living rooms, family rooms and dens – large rooms that benefit from a heat source that’s more economical than standard central heat or radiators. But it’s not just heat that fireplaces bring. Every real estate agent will tell you that a handsome fireplace will increase the perceived value of a home in the minds of prospective buyers. On top of that, fireplaces add mood and a feeling of luxury to a room, and that’s one of the reasons why we’re seeing more and more of them being installed in kitchens and bathrooms.

Is a fireplace appropriate for your kitchen or bathroom?

Fireplaces are more suitable for larger rooms, although a smaller unit can work in areas where square footage is at a minimum. Determining the amount of heat a particular unit will emit is the first step in deciding on the right kitchen or bathroom fireplace.

Larger fireplaces can easily overwhelm a small bathroom. If your bathroom is the type where three people inside it makes it feel like a crowded subway, it’s best to stay away from a huge fireplace that will turn the room into an oven. Kitchens are usually more spacious than bathrooms, but it’s still important to choose a fireplace of the appropriate size for the square footage you have.

Where to install a fireplace in bathrooms and kitchens

The size of the room likely will come into play again when determining where a fireplace could be installed in a kitchen or bathroom. There are numerous innovative methods for adding fireplaces to these rooms. In cases where the size of the room allows, a direct-vent gas fireplace is a good option.

These units are self-contained and vented out the nearest wall – meaning no chimney is required. They don’t need a foundation and come in styles with two or three sides, making them perfect for double duty between a kitchen and family room or a bathroom and a bedroom.

Gas, wood or electric?

Kitchen fireplaceThat leads us to a final consideration: what heat source is preferable for the fireplace? While burning, crackling wood in a fireplace brings a lovely ambiance to any room, many homeowners want to save the hassle of dealing with logs and chimney maintenance that’s necessary with a wood-burning fireplace.

A gas fireplace burns cleaner than the wood-burning variety. They’re available in both direct-vent and vent-free models. They do, however, require a gas or propane source. If running a fuel line to a kitchen or bathroom isn’t feasible, there are electric fireplaces that run on standard electricity and will bring you many of the benefits of gas and wood models.
